What Is a 150UC Steel Post?
A 150UC (150 Universal Column) is a structural steel section used as the vertical support post in a concrete sleeper retaining wall. The 150UC is larger and heavier than the standard 100UC, providing greater strength and stiffness for demanding applications.

When Are 150UC Posts Specified?
A structural engineer may specify 150UC posts for:
- Retaining walls taller than approximately 1.5 metres (subject to site conditions)

- Wider post spacings where greater span capacity is required
- Boundary walls adjacent to buildings or driveways

150UC vs 150UB: What Is the Difference?
Both 150UC and 150UB are 150mm structural steel sections, but they have different cross-sectional shapes:
- 150UC (Universal Column) — has a more square cross-section, with flanges and web of similar dimensions. Designed primarily for axial (compression) loads.
- 150UB (Universal Beam) — has a deeper, more rectangular cross-section. Designed primarily for bending loads, making it well suited to retaining wall applications where lateral soil pressure creates significant bending moments in the post.
Your engineering drawings will specify which section is required for your project.

150UC posts are available in H, C and corner configurations to suit different positions in the wall. The configuration required at each position should be confirmed against your wall design.
Choosing the Right Post Length
Post length must account for the required embedment depth below ground, not just the visible wall height. Factors affecting embedment depth include wall height, soil conditions, post spacing and surcharge loads.
