How to Choose the Right Timber Sleepers for Your Project

Timber sleepers are one of the most versatile landscaping materials available — they work for retaining walls, garden edging, raised garden beds, steps and decorative borders. But not all timber sleepers are the same, and choosing the wrong type can mean premature rot, structural failure or unnecessary cost.

This guide breaks down the three main types of timber sleepers available at FPM Building Supplies and helps you match the right product to your project.

The Three Main Types

1. Treated Pine Sleepers

Treated pine is the most popular choice for residential landscaping in Melbourne. It's pressure-treated with preservatives (typically H4 or H5 rated for in-ground use) that protect against rot, termites and fungal decay.

Best for: Garden edging, raised garden beds, low retaining walls (up to 600mm), decorative borders and steps.

Typical sizes: 200×50mm and 200×75mm in lengths of 1.8m and 2.4m.

Lifespan: 15–25 years in-ground, depending on soil conditions and drainage.

Pros:

  • Most affordable timber option
  • Lightweight and easy to cut and handle
  • Readily available in standard sizes
  • Takes paint and stain well

Cons:

  • Not suitable for structural retaining walls over 600mm without engineering
  • Can warp or twist if not properly supported
  • Requires H4 or H5 treatment rating for in-ground use — always check the stamp

2. Hardwood Sleepers

Hardwood sleepers are milled from dense native timbers and offer significantly greater strength and longevity than treated pine. Common species include ironbark, red gum and spotted gum.

Best for: Structural retaining walls, heavy-duty garden edging, high-traffic steps and feature walls where a natural timber aesthetic is important.

Typical sizes: 200×75mm and 200×100mm in 2.4m lengths.

Lifespan: 25–40 years in-ground, depending on species and conditions.

Pros:

  • Exceptional strength and density
  • Natural resistance to rot and termites (species-dependent)
  • Beautiful natural grain and colour
  • Holds up well under heavy loads

Cons:

  • Heavier and harder to work with than pine
  • More expensive than treated pine
  • Can check (surface crack) as it dries — this is cosmetic, not structural
  • Harder to cut without carbide-tipped blades

3. Recycled Railway Sleepers

Recycled railway sleepers are salvaged from decommissioned rail lines and are typically made from hardwood species that were selected for their extreme durability. They have a rustic, weathered character that suits cottage gardens, heritage properties and feature landscaping.

Best for: Decorative garden features, raised beds, rustic retaining walls, steps and pathways.

Typical sizes: 200×100mm in 2.4m lengths (sizes vary as they are recycled).

Lifespan: 30–50+ years — the timber has already proven itself in service.

Pros:

  • Extremely durable and dense
  • Unique rustic character
  • Environmentally sustainable (recycled material)
  • Often the most cost-effective hardwood option

Cons:

  • Sizes and condition vary — inspect before purchasing
  • May contain old spikes, bolts or oil residue
  • Not suitable for vegetable gardens (may contain creosote in older stock)
  • Heavier and harder to handle than new timber

Key Factors to Consider

Wall Height

For retaining walls over 600mm, you need a structural solution. Hardwood sleepers can work for walls up to around 1m with appropriate post support, but for anything taller, concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts are the more reliable and longer-lasting choice.

Soil and Drainage Conditions

Timber in contact with wet, poorly-draining soil will deteriorate faster regardless of treatment. If your site has heavy clay or poor drainage, consider concrete sleepers instead — or invest in proper drainage behind any timber wall.

Budget

As a rough guide for materials only:

  • Treated pine: most affordable
  • Recycled railway: mid-range (varies with availability)
  • Hardwood: premium

Aesthetic

Treated pine has a clean, uniform look that suits modern gardens. Hardwood and recycled railway sleepers have natural variation and character that suits more organic or heritage-style landscapes.

What About Concrete Sleepers?

For retaining walls over 1 metre, or in situations where longevity and zero maintenance are priorities, concrete sleepers are the better choice. FPM's 50 MPa concrete sleepers are available in plain, charcoal, woodgrain and stackstone finishes — so you can get the look of timber with the durability of concrete.
