Sleeper Grabber: The Right Tool for Lifting Concrete Sleepers

Concrete sleepers are heavy — a standard 2400mm sleeper can weigh 80–120kg depending on thickness. Trying to lift and position them by hand is not only difficult but potentially dangerous. A sleeper grabber is the right tool for the job.

FPM Building Supplies stocks sleeper grabbers alongside our full range of concrete sleepers and retaining wall materials.

What Is a Sleeper Grabber?

A sleeper grabber (also called a sleeper clamp or lifting clamp) is a mechanical clamping device designed to grip a concrete sleeper so it can be lifted and positioned using a machine — typically a mini excavator, bobcat or telehandler.

The grabber attaches to the machine's bucket or forks and clamps onto the sleeper, allowing it to be lifted, carried and lowered into position between the steel posts with precision.

Why Use a Sleeper Grabber?

Safety — Manually handling heavy concrete sleepers is a significant manual handling risk. A sleeper grabber eliminates the need to lift sleepers by hand.

Efficiency — Positioning sleepers with a machine is significantly faster than manual handling, particularly on larger projects.

Precision — A grabber allows sleepers to be lowered precisely into position between the steel posts, reducing the risk of damage to the sleeper or the posts.

Reduced labour — Fewer people are needed to handle and position each sleeper.

How Does a Sleeper Grabber Work?

The grabber is attached to the machine's bucket or forks. The clamping jaws are opened, positioned around the sleeper, and then closed to grip the sleeper firmly. The machine then lifts and positions the sleeper as required.

Once the sleeper is in position, the jaws are released and the grabber is moved to the next sleeper.

What Machines Can Use a Sleeper Grabber?

Sleeper grabbers are typically used with:

  • Mini excavators
  • Bobcats (skid steer loaders)
  • Telehandlers
  • Forklifts (with appropriate attachments)

The grabber must be compatible with the machine's attachment system. Check compatibility before purchasing.
