Cement Bag: General Purpose Cement for Construction

Cement is the binding agent in concrete, mortar and render — and it is one of the most fundamental building materials used in construction. Whether you are mixing your own concrete for post footings, laying blocks or rendering a wall, general purpose cement is the starting point.

FPM Building Supplies stocks general purpose cement bags for construction projects across Victoria.

What Is General Purpose Cement?

General purpose cement (also known as GP cement or Portland cement) is the most widely used type of cement in construction. It is a fine grey powder that, when mixed with water and aggregates (sand and gravel), forms concrete. When mixed with water and sand alone, it forms mortar or render.

Cement vs Concrete Mix vs Rapid Set Concrete

It is important to understand the difference between these three products:

Cement — the binding agent only. Must be mixed with sand and aggregate (and water) to make concrete. Requires more preparation but gives you control over the mix design.

Concrete mix — a pre-blended combination of cement, sand and aggregate. Just add water. Convenient for most post footing and general concrete applications.

Rapid set concrete — a pre-blended mix that sets in 20–40 minutes. Ideal for post footings when you need to continue work quickly.

For most residential fencing and retaining wall applications, pre-blended concrete mix or rapid set concrete is more convenient than mixing from raw cement. Raw cement is more commonly used when you need to mix large quantities or when you need a specific mix design.

Common Uses for Cement

  • Mixing concrete for post footings and slabs
  • Making mortar for laying blocks, bricks or pavers
  • Making render for coating walls
  • Mixing grout for tiling
  • General repair and patching work

How to Mix Concrete from Cement

A standard concrete mix for post footings is approximately:

  • 1 part cement
  • 2 parts sand
  • 3 parts aggregate (gravel)
  • Water to achieve a workable consistency

The exact proportions depend on the application and the required strength. For most post footing applications, a pre-blended concrete mix is more convenient and consistent than mixing from raw cement.
