Concrete Mix for Fence Posts and Retaining Walls

Concrete mix is one of the most essential materials for any fencing or retaining wall project. Every fence post and retaining wall post needs to be set in a concrete footing — and the quality of that footing has a direct impact on how long the fence or wall will last.

FPM Building Supplies stocks concrete mix alongside our full range of fencing and retaining wall materials.

What Is Concrete Mix?

Concrete mix is a pre-blended combination of cement, sand and aggregate that only requires the addition of water to produce concrete. It is available in bags of various sizes and is suitable for a wide range of construction applications including post footings, slabs and general concrete work.

Why Is Concrete Important for Post Footings?

The post footing is the foundation of any fence or retaining wall. It must:

  • Hold the post upright — resisting the lateral forces from wind, soil pressure and the weight of the fence or wall
  • Prevent movement — stopping the post from shifting, leaning or sinking over time
  • Protect the base of the post — encasing the post in concrete reduces the rate of corrosion at the base of steel posts

A properly sized and mixed concrete footing is essential for a fence or wall that will stand the test of time.

Concrete Mix vs Rapid Set Concrete

FPM Building Supplies stocks both standard concrete mix and rapid set concrete:

Standard concrete mix — sets in approximately 24–48 hours. Suitable for most post footing applications where there is no urgency to continue work immediately after setting the posts.

Rapid set concrete — sets in 20–40 minutes. Ideal when you need to continue work quickly, such as when setting multiple posts in a single day.

How Much Concrete Do I Need?

The amount of concrete required depends on the diameter and depth of the post hole. As a general guide:

  • A 300mm diameter × 600mm deep hole requires approximately 0.04 cubic metres of concrete, or roughly 2 × 20kg bags
  • A 400mm diameter × 800mm deep hole requires approximately 0.1 cubic metres, or roughly 5 × 20kg bags

Always calculate the volume of each hole and allow 10–15% extra for waste.
