Rapid Set Concrete: Fast-Setting Posts for Fences & Walls
Rapid set concrete sets in 20–40 minutes, letting you continue work the same day. Here is when to use it and how to get the best results.
When you need to set fence posts or retaining wall posts and continue work the same day, rapid set concrete is the answer. Unlike standard concrete mix which takes 24–48 hours to set, rapid set concrete achieves sufficient strength in just 20–40 minutes — allowing you to continue installing fence rails, panels or sleepers without waiting overnight.
FPM Building Supplies stocks rapid set concrete alongside our full range of fencing and retaining wall materials.
What Is Rapid Set Concrete?
Rapid set concrete (also called fast-setting concrete or post mix) is a specially formulated concrete mix that achieves initial set in 20–40 minutes and full strength within 24 hours. It is available in bags and only requires the addition of water.
When to Use Rapid Set Concrete
Rapid set concrete is ideal when:
- You need to continue work the same day — setting posts in the morning and installing fence panels or sleepers in the afternoon
- You are setting multiple posts in a single day — rapid set allows you to move through the project faster
- Weather conditions are variable — rapid set reduces the window during which the concrete is vulnerable to rain or frost
- You are working on a tight schedule — rapid set minimises downtime between post setting and fence installation
Standard Concrete Mix vs Rapid Set
| Standard Concrete Mix | Rapid Set Concrete | |
|---|---|---|
| Initial set time | 2–4 hours | 20–40 minutes |
| Full strength | 24–48 hours | 24 hours |
| Best for | Non-urgent applications | Same-day work |
| Cost | Lower | Slightly higher |
For most applications, either product will give excellent results. The choice comes down to your schedule and working preferences.
How to Use Rapid Set Concrete
- Dig the post hole to the required depth and diameter
- Set the post in the hole and check it is plumb (vertical)
- Pour dry rapid set concrete around the post (some products can be used dry — check the manufacturer's instructions)
- Add water as directed by the manufacturer
- Check the post is still plumb and brace if necessary
- Allow to set for the recommended time before loading the post
Important: Work Quickly
Because rapid set concrete sets in 20–40 minutes, you must work quickly once water is added. Mix only what you can use in that time, and have everything ready before you start.
