Colorbond Post Extension: Raise Your Fence Height

If you want to increase the height of an existing Colorbond fence without the cost and disruption of replacing the posts, a post extension is the solution. Post extensions attach to the top of existing fence posts, effectively increasing their height so additional fence sheets and rails can be installed above.

FPM Building Supplies stocks Colorbond post extensions for fencing projects across Victoria.

What Is a Post Extension?

A Colorbond post extension is a steel section that attaches to the top of an existing C-channel or square steel fence post, extending its height. Once the extension is fitted, additional fence rails and sheets can be installed above the existing fence to increase the overall fence height.

When Would I Use a Post Extension?

Post extensions are useful when:

  • You want more privacy — increasing a 1.8m fence to 2.1m or 2.4m
  • You need more security — a taller fence is harder to climb
  • Council requirements change — if new regulations require a taller fence
  • You are adding a lattice or diamond topper — extensions can provide the additional post height needed for decorative toppers
  • You want to avoid replacing existing posts — extensions are significantly cheaper than digging out and replacing posts

Important Considerations

Before installing post extensions, consider:

Structural capacity — The existing posts and their footings must be capable of carrying the additional loads from the taller fence. Taller fences are subject to greater wind loads. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer.

Post condition — Extensions are only suitable for posts that are in good structural condition. Corroded or damaged posts should be replaced rather than extended.

Council requirements — Taller fences may require a building permit. Check with your local council before increasing fence height.

Matching Colours

Post extensions are available in colours to match the standard Colorbond range, including Monument, Woodland Grey, Night Sky and Basalt.
