Colorbond C-Channel Posts: The Standard Fencing Post

The C-channel post is the backbone of the standard Colorbond fencing system. It is the most widely used fence post in residential Colorbond fencing across Australia — designed to work seamlessly with Colorbond fence rails and sheets to create a clean, durable boundary fence.

FPM Building Supplies stocks Colorbond C-channel posts in a range of colours and lengths for projects across Victoria.

What Is a C-Channel Post?

A C-channel post is a steel fence post with a C-shaped (channel) cross-section. The channel profile is designed to accept Colorbond fence rails, which clip into the post from the front. The fence sheets are then attached to the rails.

C-channel posts are available in colours to match the Colorbond fence sheet range, creating a coordinated, professional finish.

Available Colours

FPM Building Supplies stocks C-channel posts in popular Colorbond colours including:

  • Monument — deep charcoal grey
  • Woodland Grey — warm mid-grey
  • Night Sky — near-black
  • Basalt — cool dark grey

Matching your posts to your fence sheets and rails creates a cohesive look. Mismatched posts are visible at the fence line and can detract from the overall appearance.

Standard Post Length

C-channel posts are available in a standard length of 2400mm. For a standard 1.8m fence, approximately 600mm of the post is embedded in the ground, leaving 1800mm above ground.

For taller fences, longer posts may be required. Post extensions are also available to increase the height of existing posts.

Post Spacing

Standard Colorbond fence posts are typically set at 2400mm centres (measured from the centre of one post to the centre of the next). This spacing suits standard 2400mm fence rails and creates a structurally sound fence bay.

In some situations — such as on sloping ground or in exposed locations — closer post spacing may be required.

When to Upgrade to a Heavier Post

C-channel posts are suitable for standard residential Colorbond fencing at 1.8m height in typical conditions. In some situations, a heavier post section may be required:

  • Taller fences (2.1m or above)
  • Fences in exposed or windy locations
  • Fences on top of retaining walls
  • Applications where engineering specifies a larger section

In these cases, a 100UC H post or square steel post may be more appropriate.
