Colorbond Fence Rails: The Backbone of Your Fence System

Colorbond fence rails are the horizontal structural members that hold your fence sheets in place and transfer wind and other loads to the fence posts. Getting the right rails — in the right colour and the right quantity — is essential for a fence that looks great and performs well.

FPM Building Supplies stocks Colorbond fence rails in a range of colours for projects across Victoria.

What Are Colorbond Fence Rails?

Colorbond fence rails are horizontal steel sections that run between fence posts, providing the attachment points for the vertical fence sheets. A standard Colorbond fence typically uses three rails per bay:

  • Top rail — at the top of the fence
  • Mid rail — in the middle
  • Bottom rail — near the base of the fence

The rails clip into the C-channel posts and the fence sheets are then attached to the rails.

Rail Colours

Colorbond fence rails are available in colours to match the standard Colorbond fence sheet range. At FPM Building Supplies, we stock rails in popular colours including:

  • Monument — deep charcoal grey
  • Woodland Grey — warm mid-grey
  • Basalt — cool dark grey
  • Night Sky — near-black
  • Paperbark — warm off-white

Matching your rails to your fence sheets creates a cohesive, professional finish. Mismatched rails are visible at the top and bottom of the fence and can detract from the overall appearance.

Rail Lengths

Standard Colorbond fence rails are available in lengths to suit typical fence bay widths. The most common length is 2400mm, which suits posts set at approximately 2400mm centres.

Rails can be cut to length on site if required for non-standard bay widths.

How Many Rails Do I Need?

For a standard 1.8m Colorbond fence, three rails per bay is the standard — top, mid and bottom. For taller fences (2.1m or 2.4m), an additional mid rail may be required.

As a general guide, multiply the number of fence bays by three to get the number of rails required, then add 10% for waste and cutting.

Pairing with Other Colorbond Components

For a complete Colorbond fence system, you will also need:

  • Fence sheets — in a matching colour
  • C-channel posts — to support the rails
  • Post caps — to finish the top of the posts
  • Under-fence plinth (optional) — to fill the gap at the base

FPM Building Supplies stocks all of these components.
