What Is a Gate Stile?

A gate stile is the vertical post to which a gate is hinged (the hinge stile) or latched (the latch stile). Unlike standard C-channel fence posts, gate stiles are designed to carry the additional loads imposed by a gate — including the weight of the gate itself and the dynamic forces created when the gate is opened, closed and latched.

Why Can't I Just Use a Standard Fence Post?

A standard C-channel fence post is designed to carry the relatively static loads of fence sheets and rails. A gate imposes additional loads:

• Weight — a gate is heavier than a fence panel of the same size
• Dynamic loads — opening and closing a gate creates impact and vibration loads
• Cantilever loads — the gate hangs off one side of the post, creating a bending moment that a standard post may not be designed to resist

Using an undersized post for a gate can result in the post leaning, the gate sagging, or the post failing over time.

Hinge Stile vs Latch Stile

A gate installation typically requires two gate stiles:

Hinge stile — the post on the hinge side of the gate. This post carries the full weight of the gate and must be set in a substantial concrete footing.

Latch stile — the post on the latch side of the gate. This post carries the latch and must be positioned accurately to ensure the gate closes and latches correctly.

Gate Stile Sizing

The appropriate gate stile size depends on the width and height of the gate. Wider and taller gates impose greater loads and require larger, more heavily embedded posts.
