Timber Fence Capping 75×25mm: Finish Your Fence at the Top

Timber fence capping is the horizontal board installed along the very top of a timber paling fence. It is a finishing detail that makes a significant difference to both the appearance and the longevity of the fence.

FPM Building Supplies stocks timber fence capping in 75×25mm for projects across Victoria.

What Is Fence Capping?

Fence capping (also called a top cap or capping rail) is a flat board installed horizontally along the top of the fence, covering the top edges of the fence palings. It sits on top of the palings and is nailed or screwed in place.

Why Use Fence Capping?

Protects end grain — The top of each fence paling exposes the end grain of the timber, which absorbs water much more readily than the face grain. Water absorbed through the end grain accelerates rot and decay. A capping board covers the end grain and significantly reduces water ingress.

Improves appearance — Capping gives the top of the fence a clean, finished look. Without capping, the individual paling tops are visible and the fence can look unfinished.

Structural benefit — Capping ties the tops of the palings together, improving the rigidity of the fence face.

Easy to replace — If the capping deteriorates, it can be replaced without disturbing the palings.

Dimensions

Our timber fence capping is:

  • 75mm wide — providing good coverage over the paling tops
  • 25mm thick — substantial enough to resist warping and provide good protection

Material

Our fence capping is available in treated pine, which provides resistance to rot and decay in outdoor conditions.

Installation

Capping is installed by nailing or screwing it to the tops of the fence palings, running continuously along the top of the fence. It should be installed with the face side up and should overhang the palings slightly on both sides to shed water away from the fence face.

Complete Timber Fence Components

A complete timber paling fence also requires:

  • Fence palings — 100×12mm or 150×12mm
  • Fence rails — 75×50mm treated pine
  • Fence posts — hardwood, cypress or treated pine
  • Fence plinth (optional) — at the base

FPM Building Supplies stocks all of these components.
