Treated Pine Fence Rails 75×50mm: The Structural Backbone

Treated pine fence rails are the horizontal structural members that run between fence posts and provide the attachment points for fence palings. Getting the right rail size and spacing is essential for a fence that is structurally sound and will stand the test of time.

FPM Building Supplies stocks treated pine fence rails in 75×50mm for timber fencing projects across Victoria.

What Are Fence Rails?

Fence rails are the horizontal timbers that span between fence posts, to which the vertical fence palings are nailed or screwed. A standard timber paling fence typically uses two or three rails per bay:

  • Top rail — near the top of the fence
  • Bottom rail — near the base of the fence
  • Mid rail (for taller fences) — in the middle

The rails are attached to the fence posts, either by nailing, screwing or using metal brackets.

Why 75×50mm?

The 75×50mm section is the standard size for residential timber fence rails. It provides:

  • Sufficient strength to span between posts at standard spacings (1.8–2.4m)
  • Adequate thickness for nailing or screwing palings without splitting
  • Good resistance to bowing over the span between posts

For longer spans or heavier applications, a larger section may be required.

Rail Spacing

For a standard 1.8m fence, two rails are typically used — one near the top and one near the bottom. The rails are usually positioned approximately 150–200mm from the top and bottom of the fence.

For taller fences (1.8m+), a third mid rail is recommended to prevent the palings from bowing outward.

Treated Pine for Outdoor Use

Our fence rails are treated pine, providing resistance to rot, decay and insect attack in outdoor conditions. The treatment is suitable for above-ground fencing applications.

Complete Timber Fence Components

A complete timber paling fence also requires:

  • Fence palings — 100×12mm or 150×12mm
  • Fence posts — hardwood, cypress or treated pine
  • Fence capping (optional) — 75×25mm along the top
  • Fence plinth (optional) — at the base

FPM Building Supplies stocks all of these components.
